Protect Your Child’s Eyes From UV Rays This Summer

Summer in Wylie means more time at the pool, playground, sports field, lake, and backyard. Those bright days are made for family fun, but they also bring more exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Just as sunscreen protects your child’s skin, the right sunglasses and sun-smart habits help protect their eyes.

UV light can affect eye tissue, and exposure adds up over time. Too much UV exposure is associated with short-term problems such as photokeratitis—sometimes called a sunburn of the eye—and a higher lifetime risk of cataracts, growths on the eye, and other eye conditions. Children benefit from starting protective habits early because they often spend many hours outside and may not remember eye protection on their own.

Below, our eye care team at Wylie Vision Care discusses how to help your child choose the best UV protection for their eyes, so they can keep their vision clear for your to come.

Choose Sunglasses for Protection, Not Just Style

A fun color or favorite character may help your child want to wear sunglasses, but the label matters most. Look for lenses marked “100% UVA and UVB protection,” “99% to 100% UV protection,” or “UV400.” Lens darkness alone does not show how much UV protection a pair provides.

Choose frames that fit comfortably without slipping, pinching, or leaving large gaps around the eyes. Larger lenses and wraparound styles offer more coverage, including protection from sunlight entering at the sides. For children who are active, ask about durable, impact-resistant lens materials. If your child wears prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses can provide clear vision and UV protection in one pair.

For sports with a risk of eye injury, use sport-specific protective eyewear; everyday sunglasses are not a substitute.

Polarized lenses can reduce glare from water, pavement, and other reflective surfaces, making outdoor activities more comfortable. However, polarization and UV protection are different features, so check the UV label even when the lenses are polarized.

Add a Hat and Plan Around the Strongest Sun

Sunglasses work even better when paired with a wide-brimmed hat that shades the eyes. When possible, plan breaks in the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV radiation is often strongest. Check the UV Index before long outdoor activities, and remember that UV rays can still reach the eyes on cloudy days.

Extra care is especially important around pools, lakes, concrete, and other bright surfaces that can reflect sunlight. Keep a pair of UV-protective sunglasses in the car, sports bag, or pool tote so they are available whenever your child heads outside.

Help Sunglasses Become an Everyday Habit

Children are more likely to wear sunglasses when the routine is simple and consistent. Let your child help choose a comfortable pair, label the case with their name, and make “shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses” the family checklist before leaving home. Adults can set the example by wearing their own sunglasses, too.

Inspect the lenses and frames regularly. Replace sunglasses that are deeply scratched, warped, too small, or no longer stay in place. A secure strap can help younger children keep their sunglasses on during active play.

Know When to Call the Eye Doctor

After intense sun exposure, eye pain, redness, tearing, blurred vision, or strong light sensitivity should not be ignored. Contact an eye care professional promptly, especially if symptoms are severe, sudden, or do not improve.

UV protection is one part of lifelong eye health. Comprehensive pediatric eye exams can identify vision changes and eye-health concerns that children may not notice or explain. Wylie Vision Care provides personalized eye care for school-age children and can help your family choose comfortable sunglasses, prescription sunwear, and other options suited to your child’s activities.
